Emergency Medical Technician Richard Patton, Firefighter and First Responder for the George Hildebrand Fire Department, was named 2006 First Responder of the Year for exemplary service and dedication to the community of George Hildebrand.

Patton has been a member of the George Hildebrand Fire Department since November 2003. He quickly obtained certification as a Firefighter 1 and 2. In 2005 he was voted by his department as the Firefighter of the Year and he became credentialed as an Emergency Medical Technician by the North Carolina Office of EMS. He was promoted to the position of Lieutenant in 2007 and has been recognized by his department for responding to the most number of calls each year since his membership.

Patton’s award stems from nominations presented by Burke EMS employees and from first responder team leader nominations from fire and rescue departments throughout the county.

Burke County Emergency Services First Responder Coordinator Lt. Scott Brasecker and Major Ken Anthony presented Patton with the award at the Fire Department meeting on January 22, 2007. Lt. Brasecker commended Patton for his dedication to the people of his community, his outstanding call response record and loyalty to the George Hildebrand Fire Department. George Hildebrand Fire Department was very inspirational in the initial development of the First Responder Program in 1981 according to Major Ken Anthony. Anthony stated that volunteers such as Patton are a vital part in providing care to the sick and injured patients in Burke County. Anthony also stated that 2006 was the twelfth year this award has been presented.
