Burke County Emergency Medical Services
provides pre-hospital medical services to over 92, 000 citizens of Burke County and covers 511 square miles of the county.  Burke County Emergency Medical Services currently has five (5) stations located across the county.

 

Station 1 is located behind Grace Hospital and houses two (2) EMS Units staffed with Paramedics and one (1) Quick Response Vehicle (QRV) which is staffed with a supervisor operating at the Paramedic level. The QRV is equipped with Paramedical equipment, support supplies, and technical rescue equipment. The QRV is responsible for management of resources and EMS Response overflow, when all EMS Units are on other calls. Both Burke County Rescue and East Burke Rescue support the QRV, for transport capabilities. Station 1 also houses a third EMS Unit Monday through Friday from the hours of 9:30 am to 6:30 pm. This unit is also staffed at the Paramedic level.

 

Station 2, which is located beside Valdese General Hospital on Malcolm Boulevard in Rutherford College. The EMS Unit is staffed at the Paramedic level 24 hours / 7 days a week.

 

Station 3 is located in the town of Glen Alpine on Catawba Street. The units are also staffed at the Paramedic level and are operated 24 hours a day / 7 days a week.

 

Station 4 is located in the town of Hildebran on Highway 70. The units are also staffed at the Paramedic level and are operated 24 hours a day / 7 days a week.

 

Station 5 is located in the Jonas Ridge Community in the northern tip of the county. The units is also staffed with one (1) Paramedic with the Jonas Ridge Volunteer Fire Department providing EMT level personnel for driving and assisting with patient care. This station is staffed 24 hours a day / 7 days a week.

 

Burke County Emergency Medical Services offers numerous response services other than pre-hospital medicine and transports. EMS also operates a Special Operations Unit that responds to Wilderness Medical situations, and special situations with Law Enforcement and Fire Departments, specialized coverage for Mass Gatherings and Special Events, and Mass Decon along with the Burke County Hazardous Materials Team and State Medical Assistance Team. The Special Operations Team is made up of EMS Staff with specialized training and physical requirements. The team operates with an expanded version of protocols for patient treatment. Special Operations members are utilized on an on-call rotation and a call back format.

 

Pre-hospital Medicine has advanced tremendously in the past 33 years to an enhanced level of treatments and skills. Burke County Emergency Medical Services is on the cutting edge of pre-hospital care and continuing to strive for excellence in the field of Emergency Medicine.
