Burke County EMS operates a Specialty Care Transport Unit staffed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The Specialty Care Transport Unit manages Inter-hospital Transports from the county hospitals to Heart and Trauma Centers located in Asheville, Charlotte, and Winston Salem. A Specialty Care Patient is defined as when the patient is determined hemodynamically unstable requiring specialty medical care. A Specialty Care Paramedic is capable of managing hemodynamically unstable patients. The Paramedics have completed rigorous training above the scope of the conventional Paramedic. Asheville-Buncombe Technical Institute offers this specialized training in conjunction with the University of Maryland Baltimore. We currently have eight (8) full time Critical Care Paramedics with plans to add additional staffing each year.
