Bio-Terrorism Exercise Held in Burke County

In an effort to prepare responders in Burke County, emergency organizations formed a committee to develop strategy and tactics to handle a bio-terrorism event.

 

The committee members were representatives from Burke County Emergency Services, Burke County Hazardous Materials Team, NC Emergency Management, Burke County Sheriffs Office, Morganton Department of Public Safety, Valdese Fire Department, Burke County Public Schools, Blue Ridge Healthcare System, Broughton Hospital, NC Public Health Regional Surveillance Team (PHRST-6), and the Burke County Health Department.

 

The exercise allowed participants to utilize skills in Incident Management, identification and response to a Weapons of Mass Destruction event, management of a Mass Casualty Incident, and Mass Decontamination.

 

Western Piedmont Community College Continuing Education Division served as a sponsor for the event, Other agencies who assisted in the exercise were Burke County REACT, Burke County Rescue, Eastern Burke County Rescue, Lenoir Rescue Squad, and both Freedom High School and East Burke High School Health Occupational students.
